Dental Emergencies
Emergency Dental Consultation for unexpected cases.
About Dental Emergencies
Dental Emergencies include situations of intense pain, oral trauma, or other issues that can affect overall health if not treated quickly.
This service provides immediate assistance in unexpected situations, including complications from previous treatments, such as fractures of prostheses over implants or damage to crowns and veneers.
Available on weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm (or from 8 am to 7 pm at the Lisbon clinic), dental emergencies ensure quick support during regular hours.
It is important to emphasize that general hospital emergencies, in most cases, only relieve symptoms with medication, without treating the underlying cause of the dental problem.

In Which Cases Should
One Turn to Dental Emergencies?
Not all dental problems are urgent, but some require immediate treatment. Below are the most common cases that justify seeking emergency assistance.

Traumas that result in broken, chipped, or completely dislodged teeth should be assessed quickly to maximize the chances of recovery. In the specific case of trauma to a child's permanent teeth, ensuring that the child is seen ideally within the hour following the trauma can be decisive in the success of reattachment of the fragment or the tooth.

Steps of Dental Emergency Consultation
1
1
Advance Booking
Although it is an emergency service, it is best to contact the clinic before going there. This ensures that the professional is prepared for the specific case.
2
2
Initial Assessment
Upon arriving at the clinic, the dentist will carry out an initial assessment to identify the cause of the problem. Information will be gathered regarding the patient's symptoms and clinical history.
3
3
Complementary Exams
In some cases, additional tests may be required, such as X-rays, to confirm the diagnosis and plan the appropriate treatment.
4
4
Immediate Treatment
After identifying the problem, the most appropriate treatment is carried out to relieve pain, eliminate infection or stabilise the situation. In the case of fractures of prostheses on implants or crowns, the internal laboratory of MALO CLINIC allows for a quick and effective resolution.
5
5
Follow-up Plan
Dental emergencies often address the immediate problem but require additional consultations to complete the treatment. The dentist will advise on the next steps.

At MALO CLINIC, your oral health is our priority.
Our clinical team is here to help you.

Frequently Asked Questions
1
What is considered a true dental emergency?
A dental urgency is any situation that causes intense pain, significant discomfort, or risk of complications, such as infections or trauma.
2
Can I go directly to the clinic without an appointment?
It is preferable to contact the clinic in advance to ensure that there is availability, and the urgency will be directed to the area of specialty and to the most suitable dentist for your case.
3
How long does emergency care take?
The duration varies according to the complexity of the problem, but the priority is to alleviate the symptoms and stabilize the situation.
4
Are dental emergencies covered by health insurance?
It depends on the type of insurance and the coverage contracted. It is advisable to confirm with the insurer before seeking the service.
5
And if I can't go to the clinic immediately?
As long as it is not possible to seek treatment, you can take measures such as rinsing your mouth with warm water, applying ice to the affected area (if there is swelling), and avoiding chewing in the painful area. However, these are temporary solutions and do not replace an evaluation by a dentist, who often can provide precise guidance over the phone, especially if it is your usual dentist or clinic, as they know your previous condition better.
6
Can a toothache go away without treatment?
Although the pain may temporarily relieve, it is unlikely to go away without professional intervention, especially if it is related to infection or decay.
7
How much does an emergency dental appointment cost?
You can check our Agreements and Prices menu to find out the cost of an emergency consultation.
8
Can I avoid dental emergencies?
Many emergencies can be prevented with good oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and proper care when chewing or playing sports.
9
What to do in case of a fracture or loss of a permanent tooth?
If possible, recover the tooth by holding it by the crown (the visible part) and avoid touching the root. Rinse it gently with running water or saline (without rubbing). Try to put the tooth back in place; if that is not possible, place it in a container with milk, saline, or even in your mouth between your cheek and gum, and head immediately to the clinic. However, in the case of children under 7 years old, if it is a milk tooth, attempts to reinsert it should be avoided.
10
Can children also be treated in dental emergencies?
Yes, children can be treated for pain, trauma, or other unexpected dental problems.
11
And what if the problem occurs outside of urgent hours?
In these cases, you should look for a clinic or hospital with a 24-hour service if the situation cannot wait until opening hours. They usually prescribe medications that should temporarily control the pain or infection, but do not resolve the problem, so you should consult a dentist as soon as possible.
