Oral (and general) health problems? The reason may be due to sleepless nights.

At a time when daily concerns, nightlife, and the constant presence of electronic devices have become almost inherent to our lifestyle, rest is often placed on the back burner. We have developed habits that are now invading our peaceful nights and compromising the quality of our sleep. But what many do not realize is that ignoring this reality and the problems related to sleep can be much more than a temporary inconvenience. In fact, sleepless nights can directly affect our oral and overall health. On World Sleep Day, let us address this issue that is so relevant to our well-being.

First of all, it is important to understand that sleep-related issues can manifest in various ways. By having sleepless nights or even just a few hours dedicated to rest, certain functional problems can arise or worsen, such as bruxism, which is the disorder of grinding and clenching teeth, or sleep apnea, characterized by the frequent blockage of the airways during sleep. These disorders not only affect the quality of our sleep but also jeopardize oral health by damaging the teeth, and they can even impact the proper development of the mouth and jaw, structures that play a fundamental role in our body.

Moreover, sleep-related issues can also compromise our mental health. If we do not sleep well, our ability to process and absorb information is impaired. We become less productive and more fatigued, with a reduced capacity to regulate emotions. In fact, to promote mental, emotional, and cognitive health, it is essential to adopt healthy sleep habits.

How can we ensure a good night's sleep that does not compromise our oral and overall health?

The quality of sleep is deeply linked to our lifestyle. For this reason, we should correct or ensure certain habits before going to bed. Before we lie down, we should avoid eating heavy foods or drinking excessive amounts of water or alcoholic beverages, as these can promote sleep interruptions. Additionally, it is essential to limit the use of electronic devices – due to the light they emit – and establish a consistent routine of schedules, allowing for waking up and sleeping at roughly the same time every day. Finally, since many sleep-related problems are associated with respiratory issues – such as nasal obstruction – we should also rinse our nose at night to 'clear' the nasal passages.

The inability to ensure the quality of sleep should never be ignored. Therefore, if difficulties in sleeping persist, it is important to understand whether there is any physiological phenomenon – such as respiratory problems or issues related to the jaws, for example – that could be the cause of this disorder. Like any other problem, this one can – and should – be treated. It is crucial to pay attention to the signs and take measures to ensure that nights become true moments of rest. Not only for our oral health but for our entire body that needs to regain energy.
